나는 흰색 크레도스 차 뒷좌석에 앉아 자동차 앞유리를 통해 보이는 쭉 뻗은 도로를 멍하니 바라보다가, 대충 충청도 어디쯤인 것 같다는 생각을 했다.

뒷자리 창문을 살그머니 내리면 몇 초 뒤 조용히 따라 내려가는 운전석 창문을 보며 괜스레 통쾌함을 느꼈다. 창문 틈 사이로 논밭 어디선가 뭔가를 태우는, 흔히 ‘시골 향’이라 부르는 냄새가 도시를 막 벗어난 네 식구에게 알려주듯 차 안에 훅 퍼졌다.

전날 밤부터 얼려 왔던 보리차 물이 땀을 흘리며 애쓰고 있는 물병을 집어 들고, 브레이크가 밟힐 법한 순간을 피해 가며 살얼음이 남아 있는 보리차 몇 모금을 마셨다.

아빠는 듣던 라디오 주파수를 바꾸고 소리를 키운다. 나는 드러누워 동생의 무릎에 머리를 들이민다. 동생은 엄마를 부르며 “언니가 또 괴롭혀!” 하고 소리친다. 엄마가 차멀미를 하는지 조용하다는 생각을 하며 눈을 감아 버린다.

When I quietly rolled down my window, a few seconds later, the driver’s side window followed, lowering just as silently. That small moment felt oddly satisfying. The scent of something burning in the fields—a smell we simply called “the countryside”—drifted in through the crack, filling the car like a quiet announcement to a family of four that the city was now behind us.

The barley tea, frozen since the night before, was now melting, droplets of condensation trailing down the bottle like sweat. I picked it up, carefully taking a few sips of the still-icy tea, timing each one to avoid the jolt of an expected stop.

Dad switched the radio station and turned up the volume. I stretched out, resting my head on my younger sister’s lap. She immediately yelled for Mom, complaining that I was bothering her again. I closed my eyes, realizing Mom hadn’t said a word in a while—probably feeling carsick.
